Patricia A. Wirth Sweeney, known lovingly as “Patsy” by family and friends, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, October 15 in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York. She was 93. Patsy was born on June 27, 1931 in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York, to the late Francis and Alice (Cody) Sweeney. Patsy attended Saint Joseph’s Catholic High School in Brooklyn, New York and worked for several years at the beverage company White Rock.

Patsy loved her family and friends, as well as sharing her doll collection with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will cherish them. For several decades, Patsy was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the VFW Post #5195 in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York, where she went on to hold the roles of Madame President and Treasurer. She did not relinquish her Treasurer role until the age of 90. Patsy was a devout Catholic and made all her sacraments at the Visitation of the B.V.M. Church. She took great pride in letting people know that she was a lifelong “Red Hooker,” a sense of humor which she passed down to her family. She could always be found enjoying crossword puzzles and word searches. Patsy loved shopping and enjoyed taking the bus to the stores, and in her later years she still insisted on walking to the corner. She was delighted in her visits from great-granddaughter Olivia and recent visits from her granddaughters Nicole and Calli and their children from Minnesota. Patsy is predeceased by her loving husband, Normand “Tom” Sweeney, and son Joseph Sweeney, as well as her first husband, Charles Wirth, and her brother, Francis Sweeney.

Patsy is survived by her children, Michael Wirth of Smyrna, Delaware, Thomas Wirth and husband Ulisses Ramirez of Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY, Normand Sweeney Jr. and his wife Diane of Staten Island, NY, and Alice Sweeney of Staten Island, NY. She is also survived by her sister, Regina “Sissy” Blades of Virginia Beach, Virginia. In addition, she is survived by her grandchildren, Nicole and Calli Wirth, Michael and Stephanie Dreher, and Normand III and Edward Sweeney, her 12 great-grandchildren, and her many nephews and nieces. Patsy also had a close relationship with Normand’s sister, Sister Pauline Sweeney of Cincinnati, Ohio, who helped care for Patsy in her later years.

MJHS Hospice and Palliative Care did a beautiful job providing Patsy with end-of-life care, including exceptional care from daily caregiver Patricia.

In loving memory of my beloved mother-in-law, grandmother to Nicole and Calli, and great-grandmother to Mariyona, Xavion, Thomas, Nicholas, Aria, Irelyn, and OJ. We will find solace in the countless memories we shared. Her quick-witted spirit, kindness, and unwavering love will forever be a part of our hearts. We will always cherish the legacy she left behind.

Rest in peace, Grandma Patsy. You will be missed beyond words.

Mrs. Wirth was the most genuine individual you’d ever want to know. She was a lifelong resident of her cherished community of Red Hook Brookly and she was my mother, Emelia Kruger’s, best friend and co-worker for over 90 years. She was a big part of the ladies who lunch group annual festivities and a life-long member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Red Hook. She will be great missed and my condolences to Thomas who loved, cherished and cared for his mother always.

Patsy (along with Tom, Thomas, Ulee, and Pauline) created a home and a peace of mind for me every day for 3.5 years.

Now is Patsy’s time to have eternal peace. I am grateful to hold those memories of her forever – simply put, a very kind person.
