Masefield Sheila D.

August 25, 2020

Sheila Michaela Delaney Masefield, age 83, passed away at Calvary Hospital in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon August 23, 2020. She was the proud Brooklyn born daughter of Irish immigrants Mariah and James Delaney, and the youngest of their five children. Sheila had three brothers, all of whom served in WWII, and an older sister who dedicated her life to the church and to teaching hearing impaired and deaf children. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, filmmaker Joe Masefield, their five children, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Always the loving mother to James, Christopher, Megan, Joseph, and Michael. Their deep love for their mother was always evident in the laughter, fun, and embraces they shared over the years. Sheila was a skilled pianist who possessed a beautiful singing voice, which resulted in a series of show business offers. However, she felt her calling was not on a Hollywood screen but closer to home. After graduating from college, she fused her lively talents into teaching young children at Sacred Hearts School and Holy Cross School in Brooklyn, having been lovingly inspired by her sister June. She always took a great deal of pride and joy in teaching her students to reach new heights. This sentiment was doubly true for the pride and joy she felt for her family. Sheila was always number one with Jamie, Chris, and Meg – and always will be. Now at this time as Sheila has been called to rejoin her parents, siblings, and beloved grandson Gabriel, who has been the family’s Guardian Angel since his own passing in 2003, the Masefield family invites you to celebrate a life well lived and loved. Sheila’s wake will be held on Thursday August 27, 2020 at Cobble Hill Chapels, 171 Court Street, corner of Dean Street, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Her Funeral Mass will be held on Friday August 28, 2020 at Sacred Hearts and Saint Stephen at 125 Summit Street, corner of Hicks Street, at 9:30 AM. She will then be laid to rest at Saint John’s Cemetery in Middle Village Queens with her parents.

To the Masefield Family:
Our sincere sympathy is extended to you all at this time.
We knew Sheila for many years and witnessed first hand her strength, dignity and perseverance even through difficult times in life when these traits are rare finds.
She loved her children and her grandchildren , and had a special tenderness for baby Gabriel.
We send out our prayers to all her children, grandchildren and Joseph at this time. In recounting the life and times of Sheila, now and in the future, she lives on.
Rest in peace.

Mrs. Masefield was an amazing person. She always treated me kindly.
I will cherish my fond memories of Mrs. Masefield & welcoming me into her home. Megan & I were best friends back in the day & it could not have been easy to welcome teenagers into her home. My sincere & deepest condolences to her family.
