Burials Unearthed Delays Restoration of a Chapel

January 29, 2013

Workmen had to put their work on hold when they uncovered four burial vaults while repairing floorbeds to restore Stoke-on-Trent’s historic Bethesda Chapel. Inside the vaults lie the remains of William Smith, Job Ridgway, George Ridgway and Job Meigh, some of the local founding members of the Methodist New Connection. They were found buried along with their wives.

There are no plans to open up or disturb the vaults. The stone slabs that protect the vault are too high, preventing the construction workers from making the necessary adjustments to make the intended stage.
