Dear Monsignor Zammit, so sorry you have left us but I know God’s face is shining on your for a life well lived. You made St Joseph’s Chapel and Gateway a better place. Rest now. You will be missed as well as your smile!
Fr. Joe was my very good friend. He was always there for me in good times and bad. He would never dance but promised me first dance in heaven! I loved him.
I was privileged to know this remarkable priest for over 60 years. We met when he was assigned to Sacred Heart Parish in Suffern, Rockland County, NY. and I was in grade school there. I could fill pages with examples of his kindness and saintliness. He became a father figure for me at a crucial time in my life. Though I moved far away, he continued to watch over me all these years through frequent phone calls and the occasional visits I was able to make back to NYC. He always called on the anniversary of my mother’s passing. He had a tremendous influence on my life. He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself, always accepted my foibles and provided wise guidance to help me overcome them. His unconditional support and love spurred me to success in life. He was the essence of the priesthood. I and the many, many others who were touched by his kindness and concern and love will miss him beyond measure.
My sympathy and condolences to his family, his friends and the officers of the New York Police Department where he served as their chaplain for over 30 years.
I am so blessed to have been special friends with Fr. Zammit for 25 years. More than a friend, he was family, filling a void of the loss of my own father when I was 16. Fr. Zammit, opened his heart to so many people. He was a selfless and humble man, thinking of others more than himself. A priest in every sense of the word. He now enjoys the eternal reward of being a priest forever in heaven. I will keep him close and pray to him for his intercession, guidance and protection for my family and myself. May you be in your eternal reward with our Lord, Blessed Mother and all the saints and angels. I love and miss you, but know you are with me always. Helen and family
I am very sorry to hear of Fr. Joseph Zammit’s passing. I also have been a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Suffern New York from 1958 to present. I remember Fr. Zammit used to take my hat, turn it inside out and put it on backwards. He and Fr. Joyce were my favorite priests. God rest his soul and may perpetual light shine upon him.
