Dora Zanzonico, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on Friday April 14, 2023 at Dry Harbor Rehabilitation Center, where she was recovering from a recent hospitalization.
Dora was born on September 9th, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY, to Sebastian and Gaetana Platania. She grew up with her four siblings, and met her cherished husband Torino “Toby” Zanzonico there. They were married on April 28, 1956, raised four children, and spent more than 40 happy years traveling the world together. Dora and Toby were also active in the Catholic Church until Toby’s passing in January 2000.
In addition to being a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife, daughter, aunt, and friend, Dora was a devout Catholic and went to a daily mass. She had a special true devotion to our Blessed Mother, whether praying the rosary in church, at home, or at the Shrine in Queens. She was also a member of the Sacred Hearts-St. Stephen parish, a Columbiette, a Rosarian, and a member of the Cabrini Society. Dora was a talented artist and gardener, and fondly reminisced about time spent with friends at her local senior center. Time with family, especially the little ones, brought her so much joy. All are grateful that Dora was joined by so many at her 90th birthday party this past fall.
Dora is survived by her brother Sebastian and brother-in-law Melvin; her four children, Nicholas (Constance), Gaetana, Lorraine, and Lawrence (Roni); six grandchildren, Nicole (Michael), Matthew, Jenifer, Branden (Tiffany), Nina, and Andrew; two great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Audrey; and countless extended family members and friends. As she always said, “one day at a time,” and “let His will be done.” We are sure that Toby and loved ones gone before her are welcoming Dora into Heaven with open arms.
