Carmela Bruni passed away on Saturday, August 8.   She was 77 years old.   Born on May 26, 1943 in Filadelfia, Calabria, Italy to Bruno and Angela Caruso, Carmela immigrated to   NY in May 1971.

Making Brooklyn her adopted home, Carmela and her husband of 57 years, Carmelo, raised two children, Elizabeth and Anthony, along with two beautiful grandchildren, Daniella and Alessandro.  They are so heartbroken at the loss of their beloved Nonna, but with time will remember what a gift they had in having Carmela as their Nonna.

In addition to her passion for cooking – she was known to create gourmet meals for 30 people in a mere half-hour – Carmela was a brave, spirited woman who came to the United States without knowing English, found employment – rising to a supervisory role due to her intense work ethic – taught herself a second language while watching Sesame Street with her small children.  Carmela learned 12 words her first month here in America and was so proud.  She said I could learn 12 more next month and she did.   Carmela proudly became a U.S. Citizen;  all the while, she fostered a loving, welcoming home, full of culture, compassion, and, of course, the most amazing food a person could eat.    You were a lucky person if you had the opportunity to sit at her table – even if you entered as a stranger you left as family.

Carmela will forever be remembered as a loving wife, mother and devoted Nonna.   Although our hearts are heavy, we will continue to celebrate her life and know that she will be watching over us from heaven.
