When someone you know has recently lost a loved one, sometimes it can be difficult to be there for and console the person, especially when you are also mourning. While some people would simply opt to turn to isolation in times like this, being there for each other is always the best way to go.
When offering consolation to a loved one, keep the following things in mind:
- While you want the person to know that you understand what she is experiencing, there’s no need to claim that you are in the exact place where she is.
- Don’t pressure him to recover and get over the event. Everybody has his own grieving period.
- Be there to listen but avoid forcing the person to speak and talk about what happened.
