Families Coping with Grief During the Holidays

For most families, the holidays are a joyous time to celebrate, get together and make some new fond memories. Unfortunately, some individuals and families may not feel the same way as many find this supposedly festive season to be a reminder of the good times they once shared with a lost loved one.

That is exactly exactly what Lurie Poulsen dreads this year. It will be her first Thanksgiving without her husband who lost his battle with cancer in February.
To fight the loneliness and grief, she’s choosing to spend the holidays with family members. She also decided to join a group therapy as well as individual counseling. According to her, she made the right decision.
“It made it feel easier because there were going to be more people around, people who cared,” said Poulsen, who called Judy Thye, bereavement counselor at Cornerstone Hospice.
While this method may positively impact others who are also suffering loss, it’s important to know that everyone copes differently. What may work for one person may not necessarily be the best choice for another. Ultimately, it all depends on the individual.
